A Hidden Gem Near Athens

Salamina (also known as Salamis) is a hidden gem just a stone’s throw away from Athens, making it the perfect getaway for both tourists and locals looking to escape the city for a day.

With a stunning coastline stretching over 100 km and fewer than 40,000 permanent residents, Salamina offers a relaxed and authentic atmosphere once you leave the bustling port. The island is easily accessible yet surprisingly overlooked by crowds, allowing visitors to experience its charm without the usual tourist rush.

Famous for the beautiful beaches, delicious seafood, well-developed infrastructure, and fascinating history, Salamina has something for everyone.

A Legendary Past

Salamina is best known for the decisive naval battle of 480 BC, where the Greek forces achieved a monumental victory over the Persians. This battle was a turning point in history, paving the way for the rise of democracy in Athens and the flourishing of philosophy, astrology, theatre, and architecture.

The island is also the birthplace of some of Greece’s most renowned historical figures. The legendary Homeric hero Ajax was born in Salamina, as did the great 5th-century BC playwright Euripides, whose works continue to inspire audiences today. Additionally, Angelos Sikelianos, Greece’s national poet, wrote many of his masterpieces on the island, and the Greek War of Independence hero Georgios Karaiskakis found refuge and hospitality here.
