The story of Explore Salamina

Explore Salamina was founded by Nikos, a long time traveler and adventure enthusiast from the Netherlands who now calls Salamina home.

 

His passion for exploration, history, and the outdoors has taken him all over the world. In 2009, he embarked on an incredible journey and cycled 10,000 kilometers from the Netherlands to Greece. When he arrived, he was captivated by the country’s beauty, culture, friendly people and history. But his adventurous spirit pushed him to continue traveling, leading to a 15-month odyssey before he found his calling in the tourism industry.

 

For over 15 years, Nikos guided and managed cycling, hiking, and multisport adventures worldwide. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the travel industry to a halt, he turned his focus to humanitarian work. He spent nearly a year volunteering in refugee camps on the island of Lesbos—a deeply moving experience that continues to shape his life, as he still helps people in the camps in and around Athens whenever he can.

 

In his search for a place to settle, he discovered Salamina and it was love at first sight. The island had everything he cherished: peaceful landscapes, mountains, beaches, rich history, a welcoming local community and beautiful cycling and hiking routes. Salamina is just a short distance from the vibrant city of Athens, so he could continue his work as a tour leader for daily historic and cultural bike tours in Athens. 

 

In 2024, he made Salamina his home, and in 2025, he launched Explore Salamina to share this hidden gem with others. Now, he invites you to experience the island’s beauty, culture, and adventure and fall in love with it, just as he did.
